Guidewire Cloud vs Self-Managed: What Changes for Developers
By GuidewireTraining.com faculty · Updated
Short answer: On Guidewire Cloud, the core InsuranceSuite skills stay the same: Gosu, the data model, PCF screens, rules and the product model. What changes is how you work around the code. Guidewire runs the infrastructure, you deploy through managed pipelines, you cannot access the database directly, integrations favour APIs and events, and stricter coding standards keep upgrades smooth.
What stays the same
| Skill | Self-managed | Guidewire Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Gosu | ✓ | ✓ |
| Entities and typelists | ✓ | ✓ |
| PCF screens | ✓ | ✓ |
| Rules and workflows | ✓ | ✓ |
| Product model and rating | ✓ | ✓ |
| Insurance domain knowledge | ✓ | ✓ |
This is most of what an entry-level developer, tester or BA works on day to day.
What changes on Cloud
Infrastructure. Guidewire hosts and operates the environments. Teams don’t install application servers or databases themselves.
Deployment. Code moves through managed build and deployment pipelines rather than manual deployments to your own servers.
Data access. There is no direct database access. Reads and writes go through the application, APIs and approved data services.
Integration. Integrations lean on REST APIs (Cloud API), event-based messaging (App Events) and Guidewire’s integration tooling, rather than custom point-to-point code running inside the application.
Coding standards. Cloud enforces stricter standards so that Guidewire can upgrade customers regularly. Code that modifies base product files or depends on infrastructure details causes trouble.
Releases. Customers move with Guidewire’s regular release cycle, so upgrade-friendly configuration matters more than ever.
What this means for learners
If you are starting out, learn the core on self-managed InsuranceSuite, then learn the Cloud differences above. Interviewers increasingly ask “What changes on Cloud?”, and being able to answer clearly sets you apart. For the bigger picture, see the Guidewire career roadmap.
Our PolicyCenter Development course teaches the core hands-on and includes a concept module on what changes on Guidewire Cloud. We do not provide Guidewire Cloud access.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to learn a new language for Guidewire Cloud?
No. Guidewire Cloud uses the same Gosu language, data model, PCF and rules framework as self-managed InsuranceSuite.
Are self-managed Guidewire skills still useful?
Yes. Many insurers still run self-managed InsuranceSuite, and teams migrating to Cloud need people who understand the existing system. The core skills are the same on both.
Can I practise on Guidewire Cloud as an individual learner?
Generally no. Guidewire Cloud environments are provided to licensed customers and partners. Individual learners usually build core skills on self-managed InsuranceSuite and learn the Cloud differences conceptually.
